Rubio Applauds Passage of Legislation to Combat Invasive Species in Conjunction With Everglades Restoration
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) applauded the passage of the Suppressing Looming Invasive Threats Harming Everglades Restoration (SLITHER) Act (S.3603), which was included in the Fiscal Year 2021 omnibus appropriations bill. The SLITHER Act authorizes and directs the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force to develop innovative technologies and approaches to identify, target, and eliminate invasive animal and plant species that threaten Everglades restoration. Native bird and mammal populations are indicators of whether Everglades restoration is effective. Invasive species, such as the Burmese python, are decimating native animal populations, obfuscating efforts to assess the success of restoration.
“Everglades restoration has an extraordinary impact on the State of Florida,” Rubio said. “Not only is the SLITHER Act a positive step forward in combating harmful species that threaten the ecological health of South Florida’s ecosystem, but it will also make it easier to measure the progress of state and federal investment in Everglades restoration. I am proud that Congress has passed this legislation, and I remain committed to fighting for policies that protect, improve, and restore Florida’s water quality and environment.”
