Rubio, Banks Call for Further Sanctions on Uyghur Human Rights Enablers

Jul 19, 2023 | Comunicados de Prensa

Currently, U.S. law authorizes mandatory sanctions on foreign individuals and businesses involved in egregious human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including those connected to the use of Uyghur slave labor. However, companies who continue to do business with these sanctioned entities can still access the U.S. financial system.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) reintroduced the Sanctioning Supporters of Slave Labor Act to impose secondary sanctions on those that conduct business with, or provide support for, foreign entities who have been sanctioned for their links to Uyghur human rights abuses.

  • “Further actions must be taken to hold accountable those individuals and entities benefiting from the forced labor of Uyghurs. Not only should China’s genocidal regime answer for the crimes they are committing but also the companies that profit from these atrocities.” — Senator Rubio

U.S. Representative Jim Banks (R-IN) introduced companion legislation in the House.

  • “The White House hasn’t designated a single firm pursuant to the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act passed by Congress in May 2020. The Biden Administration is dragging its feet and slow rolling bipartisan efforts to hold the Communist Party accountable for Uyghur slave labor, which is why Senator Rubio and I introduced stronger legislation that forces the administration to punish companies profiting and supporting the Communist Party’s genocide in Xinjiang.”  – Congressman Banks
