Rubio Comments On Red Snapper Fishing Season For South Atlantic
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Commerce Department’s announcement of the 2014 South Atlantic commercial and recreational fishing seasons:
“Tourists from all over the state, country and world plan their fishing trips to Florida’s coast in part because they know it’s a sportsman’s dream destination for red snapper fishing. However, federal mismanagement based on outdated information has once again resulted in a minimal season for red snapper in the South Atlantic.
“I’ve heard personally from marina managers, charter boat operators and commercial fishermen about the impact of this mismanagement, and it is costing Florida jobs. There is a serious problem both down in the Gulf and the South Atlantic.
“As I continue working on the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the federal government should immediately reconsider this economically destructive red snapper season rule and provide all fishermen, recreational and commercial alike, more days out on the water to fish for red snapper.”
