Washington, DC —  U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after reports surfaced of President Danilo Medina seeking to alter the Constitution of the Dominican Republic in order to run for an unprecedented third term:

“President Danilo Medina’s efforts to alter the Constitution of the Dominican Republic in an attempt to run for a third presidential bid should be of grave concern to democracies in the region and worldwide,” Rubio said. “Circumventing the established presidential term limits in the Dominican Republic threatens democratic norms and would set a terrible precedent in the Dominican Republic and Caribbean Basin.”

Rubio is the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.

RUBIO CONDENA ESFUERZOS DEL PRESIDENTE DOMINICANO DE MODIFICAR LA CONSTITUCIÓN

Washington, DC — El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL) emitió el siguiente comunicado luego que surgieran informes que el presidente Danilo Medina buscará alterar la Constitución de la República Dominicana para postularse a un tercer mandato sin precedentes:

“Los esfuerzos del presidente Danilo Medina de alterar la Constitución de la República Dominicana, en un intento por postularse para un tercer mandato presidencial, debería ser un motivo de grave preocupación para las democracias de la región y del mundo”, Rubio dijo. “Eludir los límites establecidos para el mandato presidencial en la República Dominicana y en el Caribe

Rubio es el presidente del Subcomité de Relaciones Exteriores para el Hemisferio Occidental, Delincuencia Transnacional, Seguridad Civil, Democracia, Derechos Humanos y Asuntos Globales de la Mujer.
