Rubio Hails NOAA Opening of Red Snapper Fishery in South Atlantic
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) hailed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service’s (NMFS) final approval of a plan to open recreational red snapper fishing in federal waters in the South Atlantic. In the past seven years, fishermen have only had access to these waters for a combined 17 days. Following advocacy from Rubio, the plan first received approval last month from the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
“I applaud NOAA’s approval to open recreational red snapper fishing in federal waters in the South Atlantic for this fall,” said Rubio. “After years of being encumbered by the federal red snapper fishery closure, this news brings some relief to fishermen and small business owners stretching from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys. This plan will benefit thousands in the state, and allow us to obtain much-needed data on red snapper populations for future management planning throughout the South Atlantic.”
