Rubio, Marshall Demand Credit Card CEOs Reverse Anti-Second Amendment Practices

Sep 20, 2022 | Comunicados de Prensa

Historically, gun purchases have been categorized as “general merchandise” on credit card statements. However, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express recently departed from that standard by adopting the International Organization for Standardization’s new merchant category code exclusive to gun retailers. The new merchant category code comes just months after Amalgamated Bank, a self-proclaimed progressive bank, demanded specific merchant category codes be made to flag legal gun purchases.

U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Roger Marshall (R-KS) sent a letter to the CEOs of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express in response to the change.

  • “This decision, which is already being hailed by radical anti-gun activists, is the first step towards backdoor gun control on law-abiding Americans.
  • “Any change that seeks to impact a United States citizen’s ability to legally purchase a firearm belongs with Congress, not payment networks … or the financial institutions that some of you serve.” – Senators Rubio and Marshall
