Rubio Relaunches Social Media Campaign Calling Attention To Political Prisoners Worldwide
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today relaunched his social media campaign, “#expressionNOToppression,” which highlights ongoing human rights abuses taking place around the world. Originally launched in September 2015, the #expressionNOToppression campaign has brought attention to the cases of dozens of political prisoners worldwide.
“Numerous political prisoners around the globe continue to languish under the oppression of totalitarian dictatorships simply because they strongly believe in exercising their God-given freedoms,” said Rubio. “From Cuba and Venezuela, to thousands of miles away in countries like China, Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia, we are solemnly reminded of the fact that oppression knows no boundaries.
“Over the past year, Rubio’s social media campaign #expressionNOToppression has featured the stories of over two dozen of imprisoned democracy activists, religious leaders, journalists and dissidents,” added Rubio. “With this effort, we will continue to shine a light on the courageous men and women who risk their lives every day fighting for basic human rights and democratic principles. While their oppressors may seek to silence them, #expressionNOToppression will serve as a voice for the voiceless.”
Today, Rubio highlighted the case of Russian human rights activist, Ildar Dadin, who was sentenced to two years in prison for exercising his right to freedom of expression. Dadin is the first person convicted in Russia under the new law implemented by Vladimir Putin that criminalizes repeated public dissent.
