Rubio, Rosen Introduce Bill Encouraging U.S.-Jordan Security Partnership
Jordan has proven to be a reliable U.S. partner and has assisted the U.S. in countering rogue adversaries in the Middle East. As such, the U.S. must continue to support our strong bilateral defense partnership.
U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) introduced the United States-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act to further U.S. interests in the Middle East.
- “It’s imperative we continue to assist partners who support U.S. interests in the Middle East. Strengthening our defense operations in the Middle East will not only benefit the region but also our national security interests.” – senador Rubio
- “The U.S.-Jordan partnership is a pillar of stability in the Middle East. Jordan shares many interests with the United States, from combating violent extremism to defending against Iran’s aggression. I’m proud to help introduce this bipartisan legislation to bolster our defense cooperation with Jordan, protect the region from Iranian air and missile threats, and enhance America’s national security interests.” – Senator Rosen
Specifically, the bill:
- Includes Jordan, for three years, among the countries eligible for certain streamlined defense sales, licensing agreements, and technical assistance under the Arms Export Control Act;
- Authorizes the U.S. Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the U.S. Secretary of State and Office of the Director of National Intelligence, to set up a program to enhance U.S.-Jordanian cooperation in the counter UAS and counter-missile space;
- Authorizes the Department of State to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Jordan to increase military cooperation, including joint military exercises, personnel exchanges, and support for international peacekeeping missions, and enhanced strategic dialogue; and
- Expresses the sense of Congress that expeditious consideration of certifications of letters of offer to sell defense articles, defense services, design and construction services, and major defense equipment to Jordan is fully consistent with U.S. security and foreign policy interests and the objectives of peace and security.
