Rubio Statement on OMB Approval of EAA Storage Reservoir Project

Jul 10, 2018 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today after the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) Post-Authorization Change Report (PACR) to reduce harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges by constructing the Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir to store, treat, and move more water south to the Everglades:

“After directly and regularly communicating to the Trump Administration on the importance of a timely approval of the South Florida Water Management District’s plan for the reservoir project, I welcome today’s important announcement by OMB. This project, spearheaded by State Senator Negron and coupled with existing efforts, will greatly reduce the harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges once again threatening our coastal communities. I am encouraged by the administration’s continued engagement on Florida’s water issues, and I look forward to working with the president to fund the expedited construction of these critical Everglades restoration projects.”

On Sunday, after Rubio urged President Trump to order the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct an emergency re-evaluation of the Lake Okeechobee discharges, the U.S. Army Corps delayed the scheduled discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the St. Lucie River.

On June 1, Rubio led a letter to OMB Director Mulvaney urging a timely decision of the Army Corp’s review of the CEPP PACR to enable the Senate to include the authorization of the EAA Storage Reservoir project in its 2018 Water Resources and Development Act.
