Rubio Statement on Recall of Diplomats from Latin America Following Decision to Cut Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan

Sep 10, 2018 | Comunicados de Prensa

Miami, FL—U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after the Trump Administration recalled U.S. ambassadors to the Dominican Republic,  El Salvador, and Panama following the decision of those governments to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China:

“I support the Administration’s decision to recall our U.S. ambassadors to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Panama following dangerous and repeated capitulation by these governments to Beijing. China continues to use debt traps and economic exploitation to bend other countries, especially young democracies, towards its authoritarian will, and it is done at the expense of U.S. interests and national security. While our ambassadors were recalled today, other options are receiving serious consideration, including the suspension of U.S. foreign assistance. I will continue to work with the Administration to ensure that the interests of the U.S. and our allies are not threatened by an increasingly aggressive China.”
