Rubio Statement on Report Citizenship Mistakenly Granted to Nearly 900 Individuals

Sep 20, 2016 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement today regarding a report released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) finding that “at least 858 individuals ordered deported or removed under another identity” were mistakenly granted citizenship because “their digital fingerprint records were not available”:

“The shocking discovery that nearly 900 individuals – some of them deemed national security concerns – were mistakenly granted citizenship instead of being deported should anger every American and every law-abiding immigrant who is playing by the rules to achieve the American Dream. Clearly the outdated, dysfunctional immigration system President Obama inherited has only gotten worse under his Administration, which openly refuses to enforce the law and secure our borders. At a time when radical Islamic terrorism is a growing threat to our country, this report reinforces the need for a modern, state-of-the-art system that works, and a real commitment to keeping Americans safe from those seeking to break our laws or harm our citizens. Our country cannot fulfill its promise in this new century with an obsolete immigration system from the last century, and a federal government that fails in its basic responsibilities.”
