Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Luther Strange (R-AL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Jim Inhofe (R-OK) introduced the VA Quality Employment Act, legislation that would revamp hiring and employee management processes at the agency’s more than 1,200 health service centers across the country. The bill includes critical reforms designed to help the VA attract and retain top talent, hold poor performance accountable, and deliver exceptional services and care to America’s veteran population.
“It is crucial that employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs stand ready to provide exceptional care for our veterans and always take responsibility for their actions in the work place,” said Rubio. “While we have made significant progress on VA reform in recent months, there is still more that can be done to ensure our nation’s heroes are getting the services and care they need and deserve. I am proud to support legislation that will further our agenda of reforming the VA.”
“For millions of Americans who have served, Veterans Administration employees represent the face of our nation’s promise of care,” said Strange. “It is critical that VA facilities stand ready to meet their needs. By implementing reviews of agency leadership and providing talented caregivers with ongoing training and development, the VA Quality Employment Act builds on the work of President Trump’s administration to reform the agency. “If our veterans are going to receive the best of care, then the VA needs to hire and retain the best of talent,” said Cotton. “Anyone who isn’t 100 percent dedicated to our veterans does not deserve the privilege to care for them. This legislation will strengthen the VA’s workforce, which will ultimately help our veterans get the care they need.”
“A lingering problem at the Muskogee VA Health Care System is recruiting and retaining qualified doctors and staff,” said Inhofe. “The VA Quality Employment Act would make necessary changes to improve hiring and management at our VA facilities, addressing this problem head on. I am proud to join my colleagues in their efforts to continue to reform and improve this agency so that our veterans will once again be able trust the VA.”
