Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today released the following statement urging President Obama to grant Florida Governor Rick Scott’s request for a federal emergency declaration in response to the imminent impact of Hurricane Matthew.
“This is an extremely dangerous and potentially deadly storm for Florida, which has not seen a hurricane like this in more than a decade. I urge President Obama to grant the governor’s pre-landfall emergency request so the federal government can immediately provide resources to the thousands of Floridians who will be impacted by this extreme weather. If you live in an evacuation zone and are in the storm’s path, you need to evacuate immediately to prevent loss of life and minimize the need for first responders to risk their own lives.”
Governor Scott has specifically requested emergency protective measures (Category B), including direct federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program for Baker, Brevard, Broward, Citrus, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Glades, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Indian River, Lake, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie, and Volusia Counties (28) within the state.
