Rubio Welcomes Confirmation of Sam Brownback to Serve as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom
Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), who chaired Governor Sam Brownback’s (R-KS) confirmation hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued today a statement after the Senate voted to confirm Brownback (R-KS) to serve as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom:
“I am heartened that the critical post of Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom will now be occupied by Governor Sam Brownback. At a time when religious freedom is under assault globally, filling this post with a qualified, committed individual has never been more urgent. Governor Brownback brings years of experience and stature. As I said at the time of his nomination, I look forward to working with Governor Brownback on these important issues and ensuring that religious freedom remains a U.S. foreign policy priority.”
Rubio was the lead Senate sponsor of the Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act, which Congress passed and the president signed into law in December 2016. This law strengthens and modernizes the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, providing the State Department with new tools to counter the spread of violent extremism and promote and advance the universal human right of religious freedom around the world.
Rubio has been a leading advocate for international religious freedom issues in the Senate, and played a central role in the reauthorization of the bipartisan and independent U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom last Congress.
