Rubio Welcomes President’s Actions to Address National Security Threat Posed by China’s TikTok, WeChat
Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed two Executive Orders by President Trump to address the national security threat posed by TikTok y WeChat. Last October, Rubio was among the first lawmakers to warn of the danger posed by TikTok when he requested that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) launch a full review of the national security implications of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly. This review by CFIUS remains ongoing.
“The danger posed by Chinese-owned applications like TikTok and WeChat is that the Chinese Communist Party can force these companies to turn over Americans’ user data the company collects and manipulate what users see or don’t see,” Rubio said. “There was little concern when I warned of the danger posed by TikTok last October. Now, more companies and organizations, including the federal government, Democratic National Committee, and Biden campaign, are asking employees to delete TikTok. Whether Microsoft or another U.S. company ultimately purchases TikTok, the Trump Administration’s Executive Order to restrict it is a welcome move and a distinct improvement over the status quo.
“But TikTok and WeChat are not the only apps beholden the Chinese Communist Party or another foreign adversary, and it is clear that policymakers should adopt a more expansive approach to protecting Americans’ user data and our national security,” Rubio continued. “For these reasons, I plan to introduce legislation to create a framework of standards that must be met before a high-risk, foreign-based app is allowed to operate on American telecommunications networks and devices.”
