Senator Marco Rubio Announces New Foreign Affairs Staff Hire
Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today announced Jamie Fly is joining his Washington staff to serve as Counselor for Foreign and National Security Affairs. Fly will start in early February.
“I’m excited to welcome Jamie to our staff next month,” said Rubio. “He brings great experience to the office, and will be a valuable addition to our team as we look forward to the year ahead. Our nation is facing serious challenges around the globe, and it’s critical that we do everything we can this Congress to ensure that America remains a leader in the world. Jamie’s experience in both the government and private sector will make him an asset to the foreign policy challenges and initiatives we look forward to working on this year.”
During the 113th Congress, Rubio will continue to serve as a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations and the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Fly will join Rubio’s foreign policy team, including Victor Cervino, Foreign Policy Legislative Assistant, and Brian Walsh, National Security Advisor. This addition will further bolster an experienced team with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of policy expertise to serve Rubio on pressing policy matters that relate to foreign policy and U.S. national security.
BACKGROUND:
Fly comes to Rubio’s office from the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting U.S. international engagement, where he was Executive Director since its founding in early 2009. Prior to joining FPI, Fly served in the Bush administration at the National Security Council (NSC) and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, working on the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction. For his work in the Department of Defense, he was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service.
Prior to his service in government, Fly worked for the Republican National Committee on President Bush’s 2004 reelection campaign and on the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Committee. Additionally, Fly was a Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations, working on European and national security issues. He has worked at the World Bank and interned at the American Enterprise Institute, the American Embassy in London, and the United States Senate.
Fly received a B.A. in International Studies and Political Science from American University and an M.A. in German and European Studies from Georgetown University.
