WTAS: Congress Should Pass Rubio, Van Hollen DETER Act
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) this week continued to build momentum for his bipartisan Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines (DETER) Act, legislation that sends a powerful message to any foreign actor seeking to disrupt our elections: if you attack American candidates, campaigns, or voting infrastructure, you will face severe consequences. He and Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) introduced the DETER Act earlier this year.
“Senator Rubio has got a bill that targets the 2018 election, the cycle we’re right in now, with as I understand it, potential penalties if the Russians do it again. So yeah, there’s a possibility that we may well take up legislation related to this. In the meantime I think the Russians need to know that there are a lot of us who fully understand what happened in 2016, and it really better not happen again in 2018.” (Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), 7/17/2018)
“Republicans say Rubio’s bill is the way for Congress to deter Russian meddling” (Miami Herald, Alex Daugherty & Lesley Clark, 7/17/2018)
“Smart for [President Trump] to support this [Rubio] legislation now.” (Twitter, Laura Ingraham, Fox News, 7/17/2018)
“Grassley tells me Congress should pass the Rubio/Van Hollen bill imposing stiff, automatic banking/energy sanctions on Russia if DNI Coats says they are interfering in 2018/future elections.” (Twitter, Steven Dennis, Bloomberg, 7/17/2018)
“Corker and Collins also tell me this idea should be looked at to push back on Putin.” (Twitter, Steven Dennis, Bloomberg 7/17/2018)
“There is bipartisan legislation that Marco Rubio has proposed that would put automatic sanctions in place on countries if they interfere in our elections.” (U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), 7/17/2018)
“Warner, for one, said the bill is ‘a good one.’” (Rubio, Warner Stress Election Security After Trump-Putin Summit, Wired, Issie Lapowsky, 7/16/2018)
“The Rubio-Van Hollen bill is ‘a good thing,’ Schumer said.” (McConnell floats action on new Russia sanctions, Politico, Elana Schor, 7/17/2018)
