U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined The Greg Kelly Show to discuss risks to the credibility of the U.S. intelligence community, whether former President Trump could be sentenced to prison, and more with guest host Joe Concha. See below for highlights.
On risks to the credibility of the U.S. intelligence community:
“We have this problem where we have these people that once served in an intelligence agency or in the FBI. It could be at any level. We don’t even know what these people did when they worked there in some cases. In other cases, they were the highest ranking people. They leave the service of our government, and then they go out and basically use their title, use the credibility that’s supposed to come with that, to sign letters saying, ‘We think this is disinformation, Russian efforts,’ without any evidence of the kind whatsoever. And you can’t fire them, because they don’t work there anymore.
“Then you have the media that says, ‘These guys are saying [it’s disinformation], and we’re not going to report on it, we’re going to censor it, we’re going to cover it up.’ This happened all in October [of 2020]. It happened right before an election. That was information that Americans did not have access to, because you could not even post the story. Not only would they not cover it, to the extent they did, they covered it as disinformation.
“This was despite the DNI at the time, under the Trump Administration, who had come out and said, ‘There’s no evidence that this is disinformation.’ The FBI knew it at the time and didn’t say it, but the DNI came out. [The media] ignored the official intelligence agency assessment that was put out there. They ignored it, and they chose to listen to people that signed this letter.
“We have a big problem, because [this] is destroying the credibility of our agencies. They’ve got to figure out some way or some process to keep people who used to be in the intelligence community from damaging people’s confidence…. These formers are going out there and doing whatever. Clapper is basically a full-time agent of disinformation. So is Brennan, so is Comey. There’s money to be made off this stuff, too. That’s what gets you an on-air contributor-ship.
“One day, [the government is] going to warn, ‘The Chinese are about to do this,’ and people aren’t going to believe them: ‘I don’t believe them, they’re always lying.’ We can’t afford that. But that’s the damage they’re doing to our institutions, as they’ve done to the criminal justice system, as they’ve done, frankly, to Congress by using it as a weapon against Trump not once, but twice during impeachments, as they’ve done to our universities who were once the envy of the world. Now, our elite universities are now an embarrassment.”
On whether former President Trump could be sentenced to prison:
“I think there’s a real chance. From everything I hear from people that were sitting there, it was clear as day that, from the very beginning, [the judge] was antagonistic towards Trump….
“I don’t think this judge cares if [his decision] is reversed, because he’ll leave the bench now and make God knows how much money on a corporate board or being on television. He’ll be a hero to that segment of the population that wants Trump in jail for whatever. They don’t even care. He could be guilty of anything. They just want him put away….
“The Trump lawyers [may] immediately file for a suspended sentence pending hearings. But who knows the answer? Maybe [the judge] says, ‘Okay, not jail, but you have to report once a week to a probation officer in Manhattan,’ or, ‘You have to do some humiliating community service so we can embarrass you,’ or, ‘You can’t leave the state of New York.’ Who knows what he’ll do? We really don’t know at this point.
“I think these people have shown their willingness to do things and cross lines that I don’t think any of us thought we would ever see in America. We’ve had conflicted politics for a while. We’ve had sharp divisions on policy. I don’t think we ever believed we would live in a country where all of the norms and that guide us, all the constitutional principles that set us apart from the world, all these things, they are willing to undermine and destroy for the purpose of destroying one man who they feel threatened by, who they fear may win the next election.”
On the future of the country:
“I grew up in an America [where] it didn’t matter that my parents weren’t rich and were immigrants from Cuba. My dad was a bartender, and my mom was a maid, and none of that mattered. I could be anything that my talent and my work would allow me to be, because I was a citizen of the one country in the world where that was true. Is that who we’re going to be in ten or 15 or 20 years? The world is never going to be perfect, but are we going to be safe? I don’t know.”
On the threats posed by our southern border:
“We’ve had 10 or 11 million people come across the border in just the last three and a half years. We don’t know who most of those people are. We know that some of them are criminals. They were criminals in the country. That’s a big problem. The bigger problem is the guys that are not on the FBI terrorist watch list.
“If you are a single man from Central Asia, and you cross that border, they don’t have any way to vet you. We don’t have any records on Central Asia. We have no idea who these people are. They keep talking like they have some sort of master database on everybody on the planet. There are countries in the world that either don’t have those databases or don’t share them with us. The one time [these people] put on a suicide vest and kill 30 people somewhere is the first time and the last time they ever did it.
“Common sense will tell you that there’s no way that ISIS doesn’t see that and doesn’t conclude, ‘We can get people into America.’ You hear it in the voice of the FBI director. He has repeatedly warned that things are today more dangerous domestically than they have ever been. If, God forbid, [a terrorist attack] were to happen, it would be tracked back to those border policies of President Joe Biden, who didn’t just allow people to come in, but invited them to come in.
“This is not immigration. We need to stop calling it immigration. This is mass migration. We’ve always had immigration in this country. But this is mass migration. That’s something completely different, an invasion.”
