MEDIA ADVISORY: Rubio To Visit Naval Station Mayport

Nov 23, 2014 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, November 24, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) will hold a media availability at 2pm EST outside Naval Station Mayport’s main gate following his visit to the base. Mayport is the third largest Navy base in the U.S. and second largest on the East Coast. Rubio will highlight the importance of NS Mayport’s role in U.S. national defense and maritime security.

As part of his visit, Rubio will meet with NS Mayport Commanding Officer (CO) Captain Wesley McCall, and CO of the USS Iwo Jima, Captain Jim McGovern. Rubio will tour the USS Iwo Jima, which was welcomed to Mayport in a change of homeport ceremony in August. The USS Iwo Jima is the lead ship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which is also comprised of the USS Fort McHenry and USS New York. Rubio, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, will learn about the ship’s capabilities and have lunch with sailors onboard.

Rubio is also interested in learning about Mayport’s preparations to receive at least six new Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) starting in 2016. Additionally, Rubio intends to continue to press the Obama administration to support the Navy’s requirement to strategically disperse aircraft carriers on the East Coast and permanently homeport a nuclear powered aircraft carrier in Florida.

Media wishing to attend the following event must RSVP to Brooke_Sammon@rubio.senate.gov.
