Photo Release: At Panama City Beach Veterans Town Hall, Rubio Pushes For VA Reform & Accountability
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today met with veterans at a town hall event in Panama City Beach to hear their concerns and experiences at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Rubio stressed that the VA must be held accountable on delivering its commitments to our veterans and reiterated his continued efforts to reform the VA.
“Well it’s an issue we’ve been working on during my time. Obviously not just the 4,000 cases that we’ve processed, but the work on the VA accountability act,” Rubio said during a media availability after the event. “And so, we had many conversations with different veterans’ organizations about doing a town hall to not just discuss what we’ve done but to get some input, as you heard today.”
“Whether it’s being denied access to the pain medications, or some of the mental health issues, or the transportation issues, those are important things for us to be able to go back and see how we can improve upon,” Rubio continued. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get the second bill passed, the accountability act, so that we can bring more accountability to the VA at every level.
“In essence, we need new leadership at the VA and we all had high hopes that current secretary would be that, but it has not turned out that way,” Rubio added. “So sadly we will have to wait for this election in hopes having a new president that will prioritize the right leadership at the VA so you can see some of the systemic changes.
“My other hope is that we can convince our colleagues in the Democratic Party to be more supportive of some of the accountability measures that they so far opposed because they have chosen sides with the unions as opposed to siding with the veterans on the issues of accountability,” Rubio concluded.
