PHOTO: In Pompano Beach, Rubio Tours Sober Homes Neighborhood, Joins Opioid Epidemic Roundtable with Local Officials
Pompano Beach, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today toured a sober homes neighborhood and met with local officials and stakeholders at the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce to discuss challenges South Florida faces with the opioid crisis, including illicit sober homes and insurance fraud. Earlier this month, Rubio introduced the Sober Home Fraud Detection Act, which aims to help law enforcement, private insurers and patients identify potentially illicit sober home providers to ensure those who need treatment are able to do so from legitimate facilities while also preventing health care fraud.
“Today’s tour and roundtable were eye-opening and provided further insight to the challenges South Florida faces in combatting its opioid crisis,” said Rubio. “This epidemic has ripped apart the lives and families of too many Americans. However, at a time when people are vulnerable and in need of treatment, heartless imposters have deceived many of them by setting up illegitimate sober homes that end up being more harmful than helpful. I have introduced legislation that goes after these fraudulent sober homes, and I remain committed to working with officials and stakeholders to deliver the resources needed to combat the opioid epidemic and those seeking to scam its victims.”
