Strengthening Families
Ask anyone what is most important to them in life, and the answer will almost always include “my family.” The reason why is as simple as it is profound: families are the basic building blocks of society. They give us life, teach us how to love and live with others, and grant meaning to our day-to-day lives. Without them, our nation would cease to exist.
That’s why the decline of the American family is so troubling. Today, fewer Americans are married, fewer Americans getting married, and fewer Americans are having children than ever before.

There are lots of reasons for these trends. Some are cultural, the result of people letting go of long-held values and traditions. But others are the result of failed government policies. Studies reveal that many couples would like to settle down and have kids but cannot do so because it’s just too expensive. The blame for that falls on Washington for prioritizing Wall Street and the national GDP over the welfare of our most critical institution.
Comprehensive pro-family policy is the answer. First on the agenda should be a further expansion of the federal child tax credit, but it goes beyond that. Enabling parents to use Social Security benefits for paid family leave, establishing a national motherhood mentoring initiative, ensuring child support for pregnant women – all of these proposals and more should be on the table.
This is especially important now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned. To be pro-life across the board, we can’t just go after the abortion industry. We also must expand the care available to mothers and children in need.
