Rubio Praises Trump Administration’s Action Against Huawei
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued strong praise for the administration’s recent announcements aimed at protecting critical U.S. systems and infrastructure, as well as American economic and national security from the threat posed by foreign, state-directed companies, like Huawei.
“Huawei is a state-directed instrument of national power used by the Chinese government and Communist Party to destroy their international competitors, undermine U.S. companies, spy on foreign countries, and steal intellectual property and trade secrets,” Rubio said. “I strongly support the President’s executive order and Secretary Ross’s decision to issue a denial of export privileges against Huawei. The administration deserves enormous credit for their efforts to comprehensively tackle the threat that Huawei and other foreign state-directed telecommunications companies pose through their efforts to undermine and endanger critical U.S. systems and infrastructure.
“Earlier this year, Congress acted well within our constitutional authority to block Huawei from our telecommunications equipment market due to concerns with the company’s links to China’s intelligence services. As the administration continues to seek a fair and enforceable trade deal with China, I urge them to stand strong on Huawei and hold the Chinese government and its state-owned and state-directed enterprises accountable for their hostile actions threatening U.S. economic and national security.”
The president signed an executive order to delegate authority to the Secretary of Commerce to prohibit companies that are solely owned, controlled, or directed by a foreign adversary from participating in certain telecommunications services transactions in the U.S. The executive order would allow Secretary Wilbur Ross to invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to protect American economic and national security from the threat posed by certain companies, like Huawei.
Secretary Ross also announced that the Commerce Department will be adding Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and its affiliates to the Bureau of Industry and Security’s Entity List. This will prohibit the Chinese state-directed entity from directly or indirectly transacting in any commodity, software or technology subject to U.S. Export Administration Regulations. Specifically, the decision announced by Secretary of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, similar to actions taken last year against ZTE, demonstrates an essential commitment to protecting American economic and national security, and will serve as an important signal to our allies around the world.
