Rubio Applauds Posthumous Awarding of Medal of Honor to SFC Alwyn Cashe
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after President Joe Biden posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor to Sergeant First Class (SFC) Alwyn Cashe. The action follows legislation that Rubio helped lead to authorize the award.
“SFC Cashe was a Floridian, a skilled soldier, and an American hero,” Rubio said. “This brave patriot gave his life in service to his countrymen, and I am grateful to see him finally honored in such a fitting manner.”
Last Congress, Rubio, along with Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Rick Scott (R-FL), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), introduced legislation (S. 4661) to honor SFC Cashe, who exemplified the finest traditions of military heroism when he disregarded his own safety and saved the lives of six fellow soldiers despite his serious injuries during Operation Iraqi Freedom in October of 2005. Cashe later died from his wounds, which included severe burns over more than 70 percent of his body. President Trump signed the bill into law on December 4, 2020 (P.L. 116-210).
