Rubio Asks FEMA to Extend Shelter Assistance

Sep 21, 2017 | Press Releases

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today asked FEMA Administrator Brock Long to extend the period of Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) for Floridians affected by Hurricane Irma.

The full text of the letter is below:

I respectfully request that you work with the state of Florida to extend the period of Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) for Floridians affected by Hurricane Irma, which wreaked havoc on the entire state less than two weeks ago.

It has come to my attention that TSA benefits for victims of Hurricane Irma could expire as soon as this coming weekend. I realize that the standard period of assistance is five to 14 days, but there are parts of Florida—such as Monroe County—where it will not be possible for residents to return to their homes for several weeks or possibly months.

I have heard from constituents, many from some of the hardest hit parts of the state, who are requesting that TSA be extended so they have a lifeline in their time of need. This storm has uprooted many lives, and during this time of extreme vulnerability the federal government must work with the state to ensure the safety and security of displaced Floridians.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
