Rubio Comments after Meeting of Puerto Rico Task Force
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement after today’s meeting of the Congressional Task Force on Economic Growth in Puerto Rico:
“In this most recent election, we saw the growing impact of Puerto Ricans who have moved to Florida at a rapid pace. These families have come for different reasons, and we are proud to call them Floridians, but we know a major factor in their decision to relocate is the lack of economic opportunity on the island.
“The other members of the Puerto Rico task force and I have important work to do by year’s end before making recommendations on consensus policies that can get Puerto Rico’s economy growing again. This is just one of many steps that need to occur in the coming years to help encourage new job creation, attract investment to the island, and make sure every American citizen there can go as far as their talents and work ethic take them.
“As we look ahead to the next Congress and new administration, I’m thrilled that Jenniffer Gonzalez will be in Washington for the next four years as Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner. She will be a great partner to me and other senators who have assumed the responsibility of championing the American citizens of Puerto Rico in the U.S. Senate.”
The Congressional Task Force on Economic Growth in Puerto Rico was established by law under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA). Since being named to the task force in July, Rubio and his office have held at least 53 meetings with stakeholders. In addition to the task force, PROMESA also established a separate Puerto Rico Financial Oversight and Management Board, which Rubio is not a member of, and whose work to resolve the island’s debt crisis is expected to continue for several years.
