Rubio: Florida Projects Should Stay in Water Bill

Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) is urging key House and Senate committee leaders of both parties to retain important Florida projects in the final version of the Water Resources Development Act of 2016, which is likely to be considered for congressional approval before the end of the year. The House passed its version of the bill this past week, after the Senate passed its version September 15.
 
South Florida leaders have commended Rubio’s leadership and work to restore the Everglades and improve the quality of Florida’s waterways.
 
“I respectfully request you retain specific provisions that would greatly benefit Florida,” Rubio’s letter to the committee leaders states. “This includes authorization of the Central Everglades Planning Project, a key Everglades restoration project that will improve water quality for our treasured ecosystems.”

As you work towards reconciling the Water Resources Development Act of 2016, I respectfully request you retain specific provisions that would greatly benefit Florida.  This includes authorization of the Central Everglades Planning Project, a key Everglades restoration project that will improve water quality for our treasured ecosystems.
 
Other important provisions included in both bills are:

  • Picayune Strand project modification
  • Port Everglades navigation authorization
  • Daytona Beach flood damage reduction
  • Flagler County hurricane and storm damage risk reduction 
  • Assessing Coastal Areas to Assist States Act (South Atlantic Coastal Study) 

I commend both committees for your hard work in successfully passing this important legislation.  I stand ready to assist in ensuring these important Florida provisions are enacted.
