English/Español: Rubio: One Year Ago, the Cuban Dictatorship’s Worst Nightmare Became a Reality
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement commemorating the one-year anniversary of the July 11, 2021 historic anti-communist regime protests that took place throughout Cuba. Rubio penned an op-ed for ADN America reaffirming that America should stand in support of the Cuban people’s quest for basic freedoms and liberties, as well as outlined practical steps the U.S. can take to demonstrate that support for the Cuban people.
“One year ago, the Cuban dictatorship’s worst nightmare became a reality,” Rubio said. “The citizens of the island it holds hostage peacefully united in repudiation of their failed Marxist policies. With the hymn of ‘Patria y Vida,’ afro-Cuban artists ignited a movement that inspired everyday Cubans of all ages to stand up in condemnation of decades of repression, censorship, indoctrination, and human rights abuses. We have a moral duty to support the more than 1,000 civilians, many of whom are underaged, who remain arbitrarily detained because of their protest against tyranny.”
“Rather than hold the dictatorship accountable, President Biden and his administration have granted the Castro/Díaz-Canel regime unimaginable concessions,” Rubio continued. “I reaffirm my commitment to ensuring Congress does all it can to support the people of Cuba. It is essential that they receive information untainted by the regime’s apparatus. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass my PATRIA Y VIDA Act, which would help Cubans acquire uncensored access to the internet.”
RUBIO: HACE UN AÑO, LA PEOR PESADILLA DE LA DICTADURA CUBANA SE VOLVIÓ REALIDAD
Washington, D.C.
