Rubio, Rokita Reintroduce Educational Opportunities Act

Mar 19, 2015 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN-4), House Subcommittee Chairman on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, reintroduced legislation today to expand school choice to more families through a new federal tax credit.

The Educational Opportunities Act would allow individuals and businesses to contribute to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) that award need-based scholarships to students to defray the cost of attending private schools.  The bill creates an individual federal tax credit of up to $4,500 and a corporate credit of up to $100,000 for donations to qualifying, non-profit SGOs.

“It is shameful that the only parents in our country who don’t have choice regarding their children’s education are parents living in poverty,” said Rubio. “This bill will ensure every parent and child has access to a school that best suits their learning needs where they can thrive and go on to become America’s future leaders. I look forward to working with Congressman Rokita to make this bill a reality.”

“Similar to the Hoosier state’s successful Our Scholarship Tax Credit program, the Educational Opportunities Act would help thousands of students from low- and middle- income families attend schools of their choice,” said Rokita. “This legislation capitalizes on Americans’ generosity and would increase access to educational opportunities without spending more money.  I am grateful for Senator Rubio’s continued leadership on this issue, and look forward to advancing the promise of school choice.”
