Rubio Statement On First Step Act

Dec 17, 2018 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement today following his vote to bring the FIRST STEP Act to the floor for debate:

“Reforms to our criminal justice system are needed. 95% of federal inmates will be released at some point, and preparing them to integrate into society and find meaningful work is in our best interests. That is why I am a supporter of the Second Chance Act, which is included in this bill. However, I’ve heard significant concerns from local law enforcement, federal prosecutors and constituents in Florida about the sentencing reforms in this bill. I voted today to begin debate on the First Step Act in the hopes those concerns can be fully addressed during an open amendment process. If they are not addressed, I will vote no on this bill when it comes before the Senate for final passage.”
